Sell with a Story: How to Capture Attention, Build Trust, and Close the Sale

Sell with a Story: How to Capture Attention, Build Trust, and Close the Sale
by Paul Smith

Despite all the high-tech tools available to salespeople, the most personal method still works best.
Storytelling packs the emotional punch to turn routine presentations into productive relationships. It explains products or services in ways that resonate; it connects people and creates momentum. Stories speak to the part of the brain where decisions are made. Paul Smith, author of the acclaimed Lead with a Story, shifts his best-selling formula to the sales arena. In Sell with a Story, he identifies the ingredients of the most effective sales stories and reveals how to:

Select the right story; Craft a compelling and memorable narrative; Incorporate challenge, conflict, and resolution; Use stories to introduce yourself, build rapport, address objections, add value, bring data to life, create a sense of urgency, and more
Complete with model stories, skill-building exercises, and enlightening examples from Microsoft, Costco, Xerox, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hewlett Packard, and other top companies, this powerful and practical guide gives you the tools you need to turn your experiences into stories that sell.

I’ve long enjoyed the impact of a story to drive a position, but have never had a model to fully develop a quality story. This genuinely reads like someone that has put in the 10,000 hours plus of bringing the concept into the field, and subsequently perfected the model. The overall model itself makes story development seamless. And this was something that I and my business needed urgently. This book has helped me both personally and professionally. But I want to speak to the area of greatest impact. As a small business owner, this book is a game changer for two critical problems we’ve faced.
First, we are a company with 40+ years of history. We’ve seen a lot of growth and change in our own industry and the industries we serve. And we struggle with telling the stories of our experiences. We have no repository of any, and when something in alignment comes up in a sales meeting, we have missed opportunities.
At my company, we have a great story to tell overall about who we are, what we do, and why. I've spent the past year struggling with getting something on paper. I didn’t have to read far to get there (page 30), and in ten minutes, we have an elevator story to tell anyone, from the POTUS to my 9-year old niece what we do. Running through our experiences over the years, we have a list of somewhere around 10 different scenarios we face when meeting with a prospect. And we have more than 10 great stories we can have ready at the helm.
Then the surprising, expected, and welcome outcome is solving problem #2. Our second problem is with employee engagement. Among the many wins from this book, this was the unexpected. My partners and I came to realize a year or so ago that one of our challenges of engagement is our need to articulate the magnitude that our employees have on solving problems for our clients. But it is not as simple as saying, “Hey Will, you solved a fifty-thousand-dollar problem today for Widget Co!” For the client, the impact is apparent, but employees in all companies often do not understand the impact of their efforts. But armed with a story, and all the tools imparted by Smith, we now have a powerful way to express our gratitude to our employees.
This book gets right to action. I enjoy that Smith executes the argument for the concept itself flawlessly, and then moves on. I find it frustrating when an author spends the bulk of their content reminding us of the validity of their original claim(s). The examples offered and the execution about each component drive buy-in without you having to revisit the original claim.
This is a book should be on the shelf of every business person that has something worth saying and something worth buying.
As a storyteller, I naturally love books on the subject. Smith's book is more than a book on storytelling. It is a workbook that you can use to craft the 25 sales stories every salesperson needs (and who knew that you needed that many?). Not to worry about the workload, Smith makes it incredibly easy to work through the stories you already have, crafting them into compelling vignettes you can put to work immediately. I love actionable books, and this is that kind of book. You will be a better storyteller after reading this book. You'll be amazing after doing the exercises!
In sales for over 15 years and this is a great sales book. The ideas in the book are very applicable in the real world of selling ANYTHING. Great work Paul.
I firmly believe that this book can help transform your sales results. So much so, that this instant sales classic should be required reading for anyone who sells for a living, leads salespeople or simply finds themselves occasionally having to persuade someone to do something. As the person who was honored and happy to contribute the foreword to Sell with a Story, I feel like I'm in a unique position to recommend this great book to you. Rather than trying to come up with a new "second impression" after rereading the book, it seemed better to simply post the actual foreword here as a review. This will provide insight as to why I love this book (and topic) so much and hopefully convince you why you'll benefit from it, too.
Paul Smith’s first book, Lead with a Story – A Guide to Crafting Business Narratives That Captivate, Convince, and Inspire, dramatically increased my effectiveness as a speaker and consultant. So you can imagine my excitement upon learning that Smith was applying his storytelling expertise to a new book on my favorite topic – selling. I spend my days helping sales leaders and salespeople develop new business and acquire new customers. More than any other topic or sales skill, the area where sellers require the most help is with telling their story. Almost every day I am proclaiming to anyone who will listen that “your story is your most critical sales weapon.” Yet, executives and salespeople tend to be awful at storytelling. Just awful. Their stories are boring, confusing, often pointless, and almost always self-focused. In fact, as you’ll read in Chapter 1, according to Smith, many lack the essential components to even qualify as a “story.”
A great sales story changes everything. It causes buyers to put down their defense shields. It helps them relax (Chapter 2). It engages their minds and their hearts by appealing to both their intellect and emotions. A great story builds credibility and properly positions you in the eye of the buyer. Instead of being viewed as a pitchman (see the pearls of wisdom Smith pulled from procurement people in Chapter 25), a compelling story helps you come across as the value-creator, professional problem-solver and consultant you so badly want to be.
Possibly even more important, your powerful story opens up buyers to share theirs (Chapter 5.) Nothing softens prospective clients to answer your probing questions and reveal their problems, needs, desired results, frustrations, and opportunities better than your ability to tell a relevant story in the appropriate way at just the right time! Too often, we blow quickly through the discovery phase because buyers are not forthcoming when it comes to sharing information. Typically, our probing isn’t effective because we haven’t warmed up the prospect, built credibility, or earned the right to ask provocative questions – all things a great story can accomplish for us.
Sell with a Story delivers on the promise of its subtitle, How to Capture Attention, Build Trust, and Close the Sale, by relaying how real salespeople tell stories throughout every stage of the sales process. These authentic stories (of how sellers deploy their own stories when building rapport, presenting, handling objections, closing, and servicing customers after the sale) are worth the price of admission alone.
One of the most interesting facets of this book is that while it’s highly entertaining and easy to read (because it’s filled with intriguing stories!), it also helps you get to work putting these valuable principles to use. Smith implores readers to treat this as a workbook: keep a pen and pad handy; download the templates; identify the narratives you need and then craft them into compelling stories you can use. The author did his homework (interviewing hundreds of people for this book), and he has earned the right to ask you do yours. If you’re serious about increasing your effectiveness as a communicator and looking to transform your sales results, Sell with a Story is for you. This book empowered and energized me, and I know it will do the same for you.

#1 Best SEO Link Building Software - Backlink Beast

#1 Best SEO Link Building Software - Backlink Beast

Link Building - Do It Right Or Don't Do It At All

Expert Author Patrick McCord
Link building is a tricky deal. Links may either shoot up your website popularity or raise red flags with search engines standards and make your site slide down in search results.
But why link building cuts both ends when it comes to website optimization and what's the point behind it all?
Years ago building link was just about getting as many links as one could. But the times have changed and it is a different beast today. Now Google makes everyone who is engaged in link building process sweat the big stuff. It practices the quality approach evaluating each link to numerous criteria to surface the sites having only premium quality backlinks profiles. That's why every website promoter must keep in mind: one must either do link building right or don't do it at all.
However some folks are tempted to get quick results overnight. They utilize link building practices that may actually hurt their SEO campaigns a great deal over time. Here is the list of 5 commandments that will help you avoid committing 5 deadly link building sings.

# 1 Keep it relevant

No matter how many links are pointing to your website they won't mean squat if they are sitting on irrelevant industry websites. The point is that Google tries to think like an ordinary website visitor. If a visitor sees the link pointing, let's say, to the website about second-hand cars on the site about dieting pills he is unlikely to click it. Google acts the same way that's why such a link is not going to bring any SEO benefit. Google made large strides to enhance relevancy criteria in its algo, so that unscrupulous website promoters can't blanket links across vast amounts of irrelevant sites any more.

# 2 Check who your neighbors are

Always take care of your web-neighborhood. Keep away from the places called Link Farms or FFA sites! It may be tempting to get some links fast and free but that may slash your link building efforts and you'll have to start everything from scratch. Neighborhood with sites that have bad reputation (e.g. porn or spam distributing websites) can negatively reflect on your website's rankings. Google may automatically assume that you are one of the bad guys and lower your positions in search results.

# 3 Avoid mass link exchange

Never rush when running link building. If you send mass link exchange requests you may get the reputation of a spammer. And if you get lots of links within a short time period that may raise suspicion with search engines as they consider this a counterfeit way of getting to the top result pages. Keep your building natural, don't run link exchange at high speed and make sure you exchange links with really worthy websites.

# 4 Properly place your links

One shouldn't get links pointing to their homepages only. Getting deep links to any other webpage may significantly improve your website rankings. The approximate ratio of all links on a website's backlink profile should vary between 30-40% of links pointing to a homepage and 60-70% being deep links.

# 5 Don't forget about the anchor text

The backlinks with the right anchor text can help search engines understand what your website is about. Anchor text is like the nuggets of gold that search engines look for in a river of content. If there are lots of backlinks pointing to your website with the appropriate anchor text that may significantly increase the chances to get high rankings in search results.
And mind that doing careful backlink research and planing out link building activities few steps ahead, not only lets you make your building campaign manageable, but also keeps your building program on track.
Besides there are lots of SEO tools that can be a real leg-up in building links. They can help you run all-rounded competition research to discover the juiciest link sources, evaluate each links in terms of SEO-usefulness and manage all your links. How to Make Money with Your Blog | HarmenBatubara.com

We’re in blogging for business to make money, right? But several or many bloggers still find it difficult to make money online; do you know what exactly is wrong? When I started blogging, I do not have a real business plan. I just doing it for fun and hopefully I will find the way when I was there. Now I know that blogging is pure hard work and I believe that there is the shocking truth: If you can stay focused, a time will come when making money online becomes your second nature.
Yes, there Are Already Too Many Blogs Out There. There are hundreds of millions of Blogs out there, as my friend said that doesn’t mean that you can’t start and grow a successful Blog today. So do not scare you to compete. It would be like saying that you can’t open up a bookstore because there are already millions of bookstore out there. You have to believe in me, that out of all those millions of blogs 90% of them have been abandoned or aren’t posting anything of value on any consistent basis. So your chance still there and just goes on.
Oh, I’m so sure about that! If you earned $65 last month and $29 this month, it shows that something is wrong. And you need to study the situation first, before taking further steps. Because, if you plunge into the next business, a lot can go wrong. The essentials of a Blog are Content. Yes, it is important to produce high quality content. Yes, both your readers and the search engines will love you if you produce high-quality content. However, creating high-quality content is not enough. Remember, there are millions of Blogs on the Internet which started out by delivering top-notch high quality content on a consistent basis for weeks, months and even in some cases years. However, because the authors of these Blogs believed in the myth that content is all that matters, their Blogging careers have been a huge disappointment to them.

Challenge yourself

First,  think you have to decide? Are you blogging for fun or to make money? If you truly want to generate staggering income with your blog, then you’ve to change your approach.
It’s not enough to write new blog posts daily and wait for the cash to roll in. The point think is you have to sell something. There is more than that. You’ve to sell, sell and sell until you become a proficient salesperson. Like John Chow’s say; if you’re scared or ashamed to sell, you might not earn a living online, you cannot be a real blogger.
Most people are afraid to ask their audience to buy a product or service. But this feeling of losing self-respect is only present in online businesses. In a brick and mortar business, we always want to sell and sell some more. The beauty of running an internet blog business is that you can sell more professionally – more and more you are a truly sales person.
So it is importance to learn how to promote Blog posts. Learn the basics of SEO, PPC, link building, advertising on other Blogs, guest posting, or whatever other strategy you want, but don’t just expect people to automatically find your Blog simply because you’ve created high-quality content but spent 0% of your time on marketing it.

Sell your services

The truth is, everyone is good at something and this is another clue? You do not know who you are? What you may not understand is that you’ve some unique skills, style and voice that your target audience can pay for. In fact, they’re dying to buy into it.
I have to say something, I didn’t realize how special I am when I launched my blog as I say, I have no business plan and I just doing it. And I kept chasing after the next ‘money making loophole. ‘Have you discovered your unique skills?
Why not bring it to the table? Use your blog as a platform to sell your skills.
As a freelance writer, I sell my time and skill. And I must say; freelance writing is a cool business to be in. The other clue is; determine what you’re good at and start selling (marketing) and doing it again and again.
Many new Bloggers experience the “empty room” problem when first getting started. They pump out high-quality content, all excited to see what kind of feedback they get, and then they sit anxiously waiting for someone to leave a comment. When nobody leaves a comment, they get depressed and wonder why nobody likes what they wrote. Once again do not just sit there waiting for someone to comment, but create it. Believe me, some readers who had been reading your blog for some years before she/he left a comment. Once again, you must learn how to market your Blog.

Sell your info product

The best idea is find out what problem is your audience facing? The best time to offer value and solve their problem is now. Create a solution a short report and sell to them. The hidden truth is that short reports are great money makers. Instead of writing a 125 e-book about internet business marketing for instance, break it down. Write a 43-page report on how to a success affiliate marketing or how to build an email list, another 37 page report on how to generate traffic to a new blog. You’ll make more money with this strategy. You’ll also become a proud owner of 2 or more info products. This is priceless! Look like easy?
Remember there Are Already Too Many Blogs Out There. There are hundreds of millions of Blogs out there, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t start and grow a successful Blog today. So do not scare you to compete. So just go on.

Sell Advertising

A few weeks ago, one entrepreneur contacted me. He interested in advertising on my blog, because they discovered I had no banners at the bottom sidebar. I didn’t accept the offer, because my blog is a review service blog, not for advertising.
But this scenario is relative. If you’re not selling a product or offering any specific service, advertising can be great for you. Of course, you could combine selling a product and selling ads on your blog. If you place 4 – 6 Ad banners on the sidebar for $25, you’d earn approximately $100 or more by month end.
Fourth, Can’t Blog Because Not a Good Writer. Blogging isn’t as much about being a good writer as it is about having something to say and not being afraid of saying it. You don’t even have to be a writer to be a Blogger. There are many examples of Bloggers who use video or podcasts as their primary medium of communication.
The beauty with Blogging is that it’s the people who produce the most quality content and who learn how to effectively market themselves who win, and not the people with the best writing / grammar skills.  Bloggers not just for the English/Grammar teachers.

Sell affiliate offers

And finally, you could earn extra income from your blog by selling people products by promoting affiliateoffers. It’s so simple to get started. You don’t have to worry about overhead cost, or delivering the product. Your duty as an affiliate is to refer the right buyer. You’ll earn commissions, when a sale is completed.
I started out promoting and review other people’s product. It’s fun and lucrative. Although, selling your product or service can provide more benefits, but rather than give excuses why your blog isn’t earning some cool dollars, start off with affiliate marketing.
That is a good start. From there, you can increase your earnings as your blog grows and becomes an authority in your niche. Producing high quality content is important; it’s really quality and not quantity that matters. So don’t waste your time pumping out post after post just trying to win the “Blogger with the most posts” award. That will really get you nowhere.
Take your time to write / edit a good quality post, but realize that it will never be perfect so don’t spend so much time writing the perfect post that your readers have already left long before you’re finished. Remember that ultimately it is people that are reading your content, not search engines.

Blogger Indonesia of the Week (95): Matthew Isaac Cohen

Matthew Isaac Cohen, as he describes himself in his Blogger blog, is a Professor of International Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London. The reason why he is picked as Blogger Indonesia of the week this time around is because of his another unlikely part-time profession: as a shadow puppeteer. Yes, he is one of those rare foreign dalang who are interested in Javanese art of wayang kulit.
His interest in wayang stems from his “research interests in Indonesian performing arts and traditions of puppetry around the world” as he further said in his blog intro.

Many interesting reports he made on his blog about Indonesian art he saw or perform himself such as this post written on August 8:
- See more at: http://www.fatihsyuhud.com/matthew-isaac-cohen/#sthash.8gX9zGp9.dpuf

Interestingly, he really is serious about being a dalang. So much so that he got some appreciation and awards. In another blog in WordPress.com, he told us about his Kanda Buwana an honorary name he received from Sultan Abdul Gani of the royal court of Kacirebonan in Cirebon, West Java. He also received a royal title from the sultan, Kyai Ngabehi, roughly the equivalent of a knighthood, for services rendered to puppetry and traditional culture.
The purpose of his blogging is “to report on all Indonesian performing arts – folk, classical, popular and modern – as well as visual culture on occasion.” This is the thing that we, academicians as well as students, are lacking: to spend a little time a day to report what one is doing, researching and observing through blogging. We underestimate the important of this free publishing tools. Instead we tend to be more active in such social media as Facebook and Twitter all of which are unsearchable. Meaning, your thoughts you have written will only be read by person you know i.e. who follow you whichs are not necessarily intrested in it. The writing in blog, however, will be read by both your friend and people who are interested in those topic through Google search.
May be, we might switch the trend a little bit by blogging more and facebooking or tweeting less as shown by Matthew.

Muhammad Jusuf Kalla Ingin Terus Berbuat Baik Untuk Bangsa

Muhammad Jusuf Kalla Ingin Terus Berbuat Baik Untuk Bangsa

Setelah mengakhiri jabatan tanggal 20 Oktober mendatang, apa rencana Bapak?

He-he-he....
